Childcare
When it comes to daycare for a child, parents want to get the best out of what is available. With the busy lifestyle of today, daycare has become more and more necessary. However leaving a child in a strange place can be difficult for both child and parent. Doing some research and being sure the daycare is a reputable one can put parents at ease when utilizing daycare services.
The parent knows his own child better than anyone. In this way, he knows what the child needs and should look for daycare places that cater to that. A good way to compare this is to make a list of the child's needs. Now all one needs to do is to look for a place that will take care of those needs.
There are many different options for the types of daycare. One is where the child is put with others of the same ages and has many providers to care for them. Another type is where the child stays at the home of the provider. In this case, there may be other children of further removed ages. Some of these in-home providers are on a much more personal level where only one or two children are being cared for. The final type is nursery or pre-school. This is not year around and not all day, but does help the children of the same ages learn new things as they develop.
When choosing a center, one should make sure it fits their schedule and is close enough to home or to work. Otherwise, too much time may be spent commuting to make it worth the trip. Also it would hard if the schedule of the parent needed to work around that of the daycare center.
Obviously money is an issue. When looking for a center, one must be sure the rate they are asking for is one that fits into the parents’ budgets. One must understand the tuition rates of the daycare center beforehand so no problems arise later on. Of course the final decision should not be based upon the cost. Centers may have lower costs because of their lack of adequate services or other problems. There are programs that exist to help parents pay for childcare services. These are through your local Child Care Resource and Referral Agency. Visit www.masschildcare.org to find your local agency and ask about financial assistance.
Communication with the providers is very important. One should ask a lot of questions, set rules, and demand a lot. A child is very important to a parent and so it is the job of the parent to make sure their child has the best care. Also the more they know about your child, the better. The parent should communicate the child's personality, likes and dislikes, medical needs, eating and sleeping habits. Other information that should help them take care of the child should also be discussed. It is important to keep in touch with the provider to make sure the child is adjusting sufficiently.
It is very important for a parent to start the search for a daycare center early. Whenever possible, the search should start a few months before the need becomes urgent. When searching, one needs to be sure to ask to see the provider's license to operate, written health, safety, and emergency procedures, staff qualifications and requirements, including First Aid/CPR and background checks, and staff to child ratios. After a possible daycare center is found, a visit should be scheduled to make sure the child gets along with the other children.
It is important to make the transition between home life and daycare life as easy as possible. At least a week before the daycare starts the child needs to be prepared for it. One should ask about making short visits to the center in order to get the child to know a few of the children he will be staying with. The parent needs to talk to the child about what is available to do at the daycare center. One needs to take the child there early so a prolonged good bye could make the transition easier. Even if the child is sad or angry about being left, he needs to understand that the parent is not leaving them there to punish them or because of a dislike for them.
